 Last home match for Highlanders

Last home match for Highlanders

15/08/2008 11:37:00 AM
NOT only is tomorrow's last home match for the season a big day for the Inverell Highlanders, it is also important for captain Dave Kearsey.

Kearsey is positioned second on the table for the best and fairest Central North player of the year.

Only one-point separates him from the top position and he is hoping tomorrow's game against the Narrabri Blue Boars will be his time to shine.

"No-one from the Highlanders has ever been this close to winning before so it is pretty exciting," Kearsey said.

But, of course, he is also hoping for a last round victory for his team.

"It is an important game for us because even though we are in the major semi-final against the Tamworth Pirates already, it will be good for us to have a win going into that match," Kearsey said.

"We have been guilty of not starting until the second half in our last few games, so this weekend we have to put in 100 per cent and play the whole 80 minutes.

"Narrabri are coming off a huge win over the Pirates and they will be tough.

"We won't be taking them lightly that's for sure and we should be at full-strength apart from Mat Flanagan still being injured."

Publicity officer Joe de Dassel said the team running on was still to be picked.

"At training (last night) we will decide from there and run some fitness tests for our injured players," de Dassel said.

"We have also been working on our set pieces, lineouts and scrums.

"We are hoping for a big improvement from last week."

Tomorrow, the Highlanders will also be wearing jerseys of the 1912 team and they are going to be auctioned off after the match.

President Damon Scoble said the money raised would go to St John's Ambulance, Inverell Pipe Band and the Lawlor family.

"As well as the auction, it is also our Sponsors Day and Walla Rugby Parents Day," Scoble said.

"We have also given 50 tickets to the Supercoat employees and the Tingha Tigers will be there supporting.

"It is going to be a great day, especially because it is the last home game before finals start.

"This Sunday is also the last Walla Rugby carnival and it will be in Moree."

Gates open at 10am, with U-17s starting at 11.30am and first grade kicks off at 3.15pm.

The squad is Fergus McIntosh, Lachlan Bassett, Paul Young, Andy Joaquim, Joe de Dassel, Ben Lee, Graham Fraser, Dave Kearsey, Tala Vea, Tom Woods, Dan Sargeant, Luke Thom, Nigel Henley, Liam Bonner, Simon Newton, Chad Makim, Will Latham, Russell Brien, Brett Randell and Jake McNeil.
