INVERELL High School’s new student leaders are thinking globally and acting locally.
Recently they made a commitment to raise $1,200 for the purchase of a Rotary Shelter Box which will give much needed humanitarian aid and comfort to victims of disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones or tsunamis.
The Shelter Box Project began in the UK about six years ago and has gathered momentum to the point where rotary International has distributed 50,000 of the boxes around the world.
New school captains, James Lavender and Lauren Watkins arranged for a representative from the Rotary Club of Inverell East to bring a shelter box to the school and talk about the project.
The money raised by the students will go to the Inverell East Club (which already donates at least one box per year - as does the Inverell Rotary Club) and president Jack Ellis will organise the purchase and arrange for its distribution to disaster victims.
The box itself will have a specific tag or number, which will identify it, as purchased by the Inverell High SRC and the students will know exactly where it goes.
Inverell High principal Dr Karen Roberts has a lot to be proud of - she has a fine group of new student leaders who will bring credit to their school and their town.
Dr Roberts is the president-elect of the Rotary Club of Inverell East for 2009-10 and will no doubt be encouraging the “think globally - act locally” philosophy of her students.
